The NKC was the first registry to paper an American Bulldog in 1969. The first AB ever registered was Johnson's King Kong. 
The NKC has alot to offer American Bulldog owners, There are many events that can coincide with NKC shows, such as weight pull and more.

The UKC first recognized the American Bulldog January 1, 1999.
The reason I like this registry is that they hold shows coast to coast. It is an ALL breed registry, they register some rare breeds as well as recognized AKC breeds. This means you will show your American Bulldog against other American Bulldogs and against many different breeds as well. This means there is less political BULLDOGGER BULL SHIT going on.
